Colossale, the French manga that is a hit in the world

Story of two French authors who have risen to the top.

"Colossal" is THE comic book that is a hit on the "Webtoon" platform! Created by the Frenchwomen Rutile and Diane Truc, this manga has been a huge success and is now published in paper format. Colossal is both amusing and deep, and follows the line of "Shojo" by appropriating the codes of the genre. The story, which subtly explores the relationship of the characters to their own social class, tells the story of an only girl from a wealthy family who has a passion for bodybuilding. Her parents, who are facing real financial difficulties, bet everything on a good marriage of their daughter to get them out of business. Mixing bodybuilding and aristocracy, here is an original and exciting plot!

The webtoon: What is it exactly?

Earlier in the article, I mentioned the fact that Colossal now had a more traditional paper format. Its success was therefore born online, more precisely on the online comic site of the same name: webtoon. This platform, which is particularly popular in South Korea, offers all kinds of stories in vertical format, ideal to be read on a phone. There are also other webtoon platforms like Naver or LINE for example. This format has everything to please. Indeed, the reader is directly warned when new episodes are available, the editor only has to update the story on the webtoon platform. So you can follow several adventures simultaneously from different genres, science fiction, romance, shonen, shojo ... The success of "Colossal" made by two French authors is even more beautiful, because the competition to get ahead in the webtoon universe is fierce.

A criticism of the diktats of society

"Colossal" was created by the French Diane Truc and the scriptwriter Rubile. They chose to combine the worlds of bodybuilding and bourgeoisie in their story, which may seem surprising at first. They were inspired by their respective passions. Diane Truc practices wrestling and enjoys bodybuilding, as does Rubile. They explain this choice by saying: "The upper middle class is a very codified world with clearly defined roles for women and a predetermined appearance. The goal of the series was to show a heroine who defies the conventions of her social class by taking ownership of her body and appearance outside of a diktat imposed by her aristocratic circle."

Without falling into the clichés of a mushy Shojo, "Colossal" is a romantic comedy full of humor, which addresses important issues such as self-acceptance, family relationships and gender stereotypes by denouncing the norms and appearances of our society.
